Dear Friends, Supporters, and Rugby Fans,
Good afternoon and welcome to Harrogate Rugby Club for this final national league game of 2024 against Leeds Tykes RUFC.
Well, we were flying high after Otley’s visit to Rudding Lane but quickly brought down to earth with a humbling visit to Hull last week! Looking out the window this morning the conditions look significantly better than last week so we should see some rugby today!
It is a perfect day for rugby, and so many circumstances come together to make today special.
First I must acknowledge the commitment to the club of our captain, Sam Brady! 250 caps today is a phenomenal achievement in the modern age of rugby.
To add to this he is joined on the pitch by his brother Jake, squaring off in the number 4 shirt for Tykes. As you will no doubt know, Jake has a long (but not as long as his brother) association with Harrogate and I am sure this match-up will be one to watch come kick-off.
Talking of long associations with the club we are very pleased to welcome Simon, Richard and Dan of Feather Smailes and Scales. Their unwavering support of the club together with their long bar bills have been so important over the years and we are so pleased for them to join us on this special day!
Lastly with this our final home game of 2024 it only leaves me to wish you and your loved ones a fantastic Christmas and health and happy New Year!
Yours in Rugby,
Mark Garrett
Chairman, Harrogate RUFC
Congratulations to our Captain, Samuel Brady on his 250th appearance in a Harrogate shirt. His leadership and commitment to the team and our club is an example to all. He’ll definatly enjoy the fuss and celebration on this special day.
It is also fitting that on his 250th cap he squares off against his brother Jake. We are sure today’s game will have some extra heat because of it!
Well done Sam, thanks for everything you do for Harrogate Rugby Club!
Headingley has a long history of rugby, dating back to 1877. The original rugby union team, Leeds St. John’s, played at Cardigan Fields before moving to Headingley Stadium in 1890. The stadium has hosted numerous international matches and domestic finals.
In 1895, a group broke away to form the Leeds Rugby League club, while the remaining rugby union club continued. The two clubs have had varying levels of success over the years. In 1991, Roundhay and Headingley merged to form Leeds RUFC. The club later became Leeds Tykes and then Leeds Carnegie. In 2014, it was rebranded as Yorkshire Carnegie and in 2020 reverted to Leeds Tykes.
The club has faced challenges, including relegation from the Premiership and financial difficulties. They have also had to move from Headingley Stadium to The Sycamores. Despite these setbacks, the club continues to play rugby union and remains a part of the rich rugby history of Headingley.
Going back to 1998 the clubs have not ever featured in the same league position, making this the first fixture between the two teams – I am sure I will be corrected if this is incorrect!
