Good afternoon and welcome to Harrogate Rugby Club for this national league game of the 2024 season against Otley RUFC.

They don’t get bigger than this!

The rivalry between Otley and Harrogate runs deep through both clubs as does the respect. As our big brother (6 years the senior) it is always a fantastic opportunity for the younger sibling to get one over on them and every game I have witnessed has not failed to deliver.

As our biggest home game of the season it is great to see it so well supported from our long term sponsors Harrogate Wealth Management and Gore Brown Investment Managers. Thanks Ralph and Lee, looking forward to seeing you later in the season!

Days like today highlight the efforts across the whole club that go into making them both enjoyable and commercially successful. The hard work from the clubhouse, grounds and rugby team is a testament to the passion we all share for our mission of “Rugby for All”. Welcome Otley RUFC - A brief history..

History of Otley RUFC (Founded 1865)

Otley RUFC was formed in 1865 but broke away from the rugby union in 1900 to become a rugby league club. They disbanded in 1906 and reformed as a rugby union club in 1907. Their First XV have played at the top of the National Leagues for over a decade, and many representative players have come through their Junior section including Nigel Melville and more recently Danny Care.

Their home ground at Cross Green has hosted some memorable occasions including the North’s defeat of the All Blacks in 1979, the North versus Australia in 1988, and Italy versus the USA in the 1991 Rugby World Cup.

Otley’s honours include: Yorkshire Challenge Cup winners (9 times): 1889, 1910, 1911, 1929, 1931, 1934, 1936, 1937, 1993. North Division 1 champions: 1989–90. Courage League – Division 4 North champions: 1990–91. National League 1 champions: 1992–93, 1999–00, and 2007–08.

Harrogate’s first recorded game against Otley was a 0 – 0 draw 26/10/1912 played at Harrogate. Fixtures between the two clubs continued almost unbroken until 1999 when Otley moved into a higher league. One of many memorable games against Otley was the 1991 Yorkshire Cup Final when Harrogate won 23 – 4. Fixtures resumed in 2011 when Otley were relegated to National 2 North. Otley are currently 9th in the National League 2 North Table with 23 points. Harrogate are currently at the bottom of the table with 15 points.
