Welcome to Harrogate Rugby Club...

Dear Friends, Supporters, and Rugby Fans,

Good afternoon and welcome to Harrogate Rugby Club for our second national league game of the 2024 season against Preston Grasshoppers RFC. Also for those of you who are still here from this morning’s visit by the Harrogate and Bradford Grammar Schools, welcome!

Links to our local schools are so important and placing Harrogate at the heart of the Yorkshire rugby community is a vital part of our purpose as a rugby club to provide a positive and safe environment that lifts young players to their full potential. I am confident this (and hopefully other events like this) will become a regular part of Saturday rugby at Rudding Lane.

There is no doubt we need to see a win in today’s game. As a club, we have always had realistic expectations about what is achievable in this league. The last home game against Wharfedale proved that even in defeat we can deliver entertaining rugby. We now need to take it one step further and secure vital league points to ensure survival at this level.

Welcome Preston Grasshoppers RFC 1st XV - A brief history..

History of Preston Grasshoppers RFC 
 
On the 28th September 1869 a meeting was held at the Bull Hotel, Preston at which the following resolution was passed: ‘That a club be at once formed in Preston to play football with the Rugby Rules of the game but without hacking. That the club be called ‘The Preston Grasshoppers.’
 
The name ‘Grasshoppers’ was chosen as among the founders were several old boys of Cheltenham College. This school had a game ‘Fireflies v. Grasshoppers,’ which is believed to continue to this day.
 
Famous former Grasshoppers’ players include A.N. Hornby, the first man to captain both the English national rugby and cricket sides, Dick Greenwood and his son Will Greenwood, later to play outside centre for Harlequins and England, second row star Steve Borthwick, captaining Bath and playing a key role in the England international side, Wade Dooley, who won 55 caps in the second row for England and Paul Grayson, who went on to play a number of games at fly half for England. Other past players gaining England caps include Pat and Alex Sanderson, Don Rutherford and Iain Balshaw.
