Dear Friends, Supporters, and Rugby Fans,
Good afternoon and welcome to Harrogate Rugby Club for this national league game of the 2024 season against Sheffield Tigers RUFC.
Back at home after a dramatic win against Chester and a disappointing trip to the seaside against Fylde. Given the subject of the last home program and the results, confidence was high(ish) with an expectation to at least come away with a losing bonus point. This felt like a possibility at halftime, only for Fylde to shift up a gear and ‘Gate shift into reverse.
But, as they say, today is a new day, and again we welcome a team we managed to take 4 points from in our last season in Nat 2. Let’s hope history will repeat itself as it did 2 weeks ago.
This week also saw Harrogate Rugby’s AGM which, while better attended that last year was still disappointing in its turn out, especially given the number of junior members we have – who I assume have someone at home looking after them? A big thank you should go to those members who did attend and I for one felt the evening provided a good forum for discussion and debate about the state of the club and its future. We shared our priorities after the meeting and will focus on delivery for the season ahead.
Thanks again for coming down to Rudding Lane today, the weather looks perfect for rugby and I am sure we will continue to entertain both on the pitch and off.
Yours in Rugby,
Mark Garrett
Chairman, Harrogate RUFC
The Sheffield Tigers Club was formed in 1932 and they played their first season of matches at Concord Park, on the eastern side of Sheffield. In 1933 a pitch was rented at the rear of the Dore Moor Inn and changing facilities were provided in the loft above the old stables. As the club developed, a permanent site was needed and the present grounds were rented from the Hollins Hospital Trust in 1938. A clubhouse was built, the nucleus of the present pavilion, and two pitches laid down in front of it. At that time, the club was intended to be Sheffield Tigers Rugby and Cricket Club, so a wicket was laid between the two rugby pitches. War was declared in 1939, which prevented the use of these new facilities until 1947, by which time the cricket club idea had been abandoned. The remaining grounds were finally purchased from the Hollins Hospital Trust in 1998. Since 2000 the club has gradually risen through the leagues and was promoted to National 2 North at the end of the 2015/2016 season. Former Harrogate players, Jon Buchanan and Jamie Broadley have played for Tigers and for Yorkshire. This season, 2024/2025,Tigers have lost all the seven games played, leaving them at the bottom of the National League 2 North.
Jamie has played over 200 games for Sheffield Tigers. He played for two seasons with Harrogate in National 2 North 2009 – 2011. During this time he represented the Yorkshire Senior side and during his second season 2010/2011with Harrogate was top try scorer, breaking the Harrogate all time record with 28 tries in 25 games. Jamie once scored 4 tries in a match and hat-tricks in two other games. He played professional rugby for three seasons with Rotherham Titans 2013 – 2016. In addition to his work with the Tigers he provides personal training sessions out of the Tiger’s gym as well as offering tailored nutrition and lifestyle support.
